NoSQL are non-relational databases that are designed to provide high performance and scalability for a software program. There are four key aspects of NoSQL, these being: key-value stores, columnar stores, document stores, and graph databases. This database system goes against the norm with its lack of use of the relational model. When a large data application needs to scale quickly, this is the programming method used most frequently. It is most famously seen in use for PayPal, since the server has to be able to hold large amounts of data while rapidly processing it at the same time.
